Last weekend I decided that I had been in Belize far too long without taking a dip in the Caribbean Sea. Though PG is a seaside town, it doesn’t really have any beaches; most of the locals go swimming off of wooden docks because the shore is rocky and unwelcoming. I had heard a rumor, however, that there was a hidden sandy beach behind the graveyard on the far southern edge of town. I have officially arrived in Punta Gorda, Belize! The idea of writing a blog post describing my first four days here feels borderline impossible — it’s been a chaotic, wondrous, and overwhelming experience so far. But here I am, taking a crack at it. Hopefully this collection of first impressions will begin to paint a picture of what it’s like down here. (more…)
The highlighting event of my fundraising effort took place last Friday, August 12th. My boyfriend Michael and I hosted a multi-act concert at WeWork in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia. The concert featured two local solo artists (India Boat and Mandrin), a four-piece live-instrumentation electronic band from Brooklyn (CMYK), and the debut of Michael’s and my band/duo, The Premise. I’ve been blown away by how supportive and generous my friends and family have been during the last month. I started a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign, and have raised over $1,500 so far! By my estimations, that will cover roughly a third of the costs of my trip. You can read more Read more…
It felt right to kick off my blog about Belize by detailing some of the steps I’ve been taking to get prepared before I leave on September 1st. I’ve had about two months to start the process of leaving the country, which has been a mixed blessing: one the one hand, I have been able to completely organize and prepare for the trip without a time crunch. On the other hand, I have wayyyyy too much time to consult online reviews.
